His Own Words
Winston Churchill
Once “Spoke”to Me.
I once visited London and toured the bunker where Churchill led the defense of freedom – indeed, the rescue of civilization – in World War II.
The underground Cabinet War Rooms are a shrine to his larger-than-life leadership and rallying rhetoric.
The souvenir shop offered the predictable iconic photographs and static-y audio recordings – and one thing glaringly out of place, it seemed:
An eraser, bearing Churchill’s likeness.
Yes, a mundane eraser.
It spoke to me: Churchill’s great writings did not, from his pen, flow in finished form. They fruited from innumerable layers of erasures, revisions and refinements.
Great writing . . . timeless, inspiring, motivating writing is a craft.
